Upgrading Ram in an Intel Mac Mini

    January 25th, 2007 byPhilip Nicosia

I recently purchased 1gb of Ram off eBay to install in my Mac Mini but hadn’t actually given any thought to how I would do this.

I expected it to be a reasonably simple process and when the ram arrived I dug out the instruction book that came with the Mac Mini to see how to do this. I was shocked to read ‘No user serviceable parts inside’ and if I wanted to do this I should take it to a service agents.

Well a quick search on Google and I found an Intel Mac mini: Take Apart Guide which gave details of how to take apart the Mac Mini and find the ram so I could upgrade it.

It certainly took all the guess work out of it and even came with pictures to explain step by step what you need to do.

I wouldn’t recommend this to the faint hearted and it could ultimately have an impact on your warranty but if you’re like me (inpatient) and want things done now go check out the guide.

    Anybody Understand Triangle Math?

    January 6th, 2007 byPhilip Nicosia

Okay, so I have been usung my Brain Training game on my Nintendo DS lite enough to unlock the Triangle Math training. With the risk of sounding really dumb and missing something obvious, I just don’t get it.

I dont’ understand the instructions on the game enough to figure out how to get to the correct answer.

    Below are the instructions:

It has to be something really simple that I am missing here.

Happy New Year from Our Wi-Fi Bunny

    December 31st, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

Meet our new Wi-Fi bunny. He’s already annoying my Girlfriend so much that she can’t wait until he goes to sleep at night. I won’t tell you his name as I have heard that some people with these Nabaztag bunnies have been getting abusive messages sent through throughout the day.

Anyway, Wi-Fi bunny has a message for everyone. Just click on play to watch.

    Happy new year everyone!

    How Old Is Your Brain?

    December 29th, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

One of the gadgets I got this Christmas was a Nintendo DS Lite with the Brain Training game. I wanted one of these because as I’ve got older my memory and concentration levels seem to have got worse over time and I wanted a fun way to stop the rot.

An example of this is at a recent dinner party with family one of my brothers mentioned that he had been on holiday in Turkey. I told him that we had been their too and he asked where we went. I asked my Girlfriend and she couldn’t remember either but we did agree between us that it was probably a couple of months ago. I told my brother that he was lucky we could remember going there at all but where we went was too much to ask. That’s how bad things got.

Anyway, I plugged it in and went to the quick play to find out my brain age. In this mode it just gives you a rough idea and I was horrified to be told my brain age was in it’s 80’s. Bearing in mind the lowest score and best you could get is 20 I was mortified.

So I duly went through the training programs and did a more accurate test to be told my brain age was 78. An improvement but still a worry.

After about a week I have managed to get that down to 34 but there is still a long way to go. I’ve found that I have got a mental block on my 8 times table so simple questions like 7 x 8 I get wrong quite often. It’s strange because I know the answer to 8 x 7 so I am now learning to reverse the question to answer it faster.

    My Brain Age

I have a couple of issues with the game. It has trouble recognizing my number 8’s when I write them which causes my scores to go down when in reality I did get the question right and the letter recognition is hopeless in my case so when you have to remember 20 words and write them down afterwards it sometimes takes 6 or 7 attempts for my words to be recognized properly which again keeps my score down.

All in all though it’s quite fun to do and worth the effort. It certainly has helped me so far.

    Podcasts on Your Sony PSP

    October 10th, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

I got a Sony PSP given to me for Christmas last year and I have to confess I haven’t used it that much. I’m not into all these modern games so much and would prefer playing the old classics like Tetris.

So I was looking at it the other day and thinking what else could I use it for other than playing games and having a wireless TV. Going through the menus I noticed the RSS Channel which wasn’t there when I first got it so must have been part of an upgrade.

So I delved a little deeper into it and it turns out that the Sony PSP now supports Podcasts. You simply enter the RSS feed of the podcast you want to subscribe to into the internet browser and it will recognize it as a feed and ask you if you want to add it to the RSS Channels. Once you’ve done this you can then select the feed in the RSS Channels menu and it will list all of the available episodes.

You then have more options with the episodes and can choose to stream it live on your PSP or save it to your memory stick. Saving it I think is a better option if you’ve got room as once your playing the file you can fast forward and rewind until your hearts content without having to wait for the PSP to catch up with its buffering.

When you’ve saved the file it appears under the Music menus as it is an MP3 and the Sony PSP thinks it will be a music file.

So if you don’t have an iPod and normally listen to podcasts on your PC a Sony PSP is a good way of listening to podcasts on the move.
