    Rescued Rabbits

    September 4th, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet in the UK but unfortunately every year 33,000 Rabbits are handed over to rescue centres and many more are re-homed privately. The sale of rabbits in pet shops make it too easy for people to buy them without giving too much thought to what having a rabbit entails and their care.

Too many rabbits are often housed in inadequate accommodation and are forgotten about by children who have lost interest in them and their parents no longer want to care for them either.

We decided to adopt two rabbits and contacted the local RSPCA which we found through Rabbit Rehome, a site setup with the goal of finding homes for unwanted rabbits.

What I particularly liked about the RSPCA is their commitment to the rabbits in finding suitable homes where they can be sure the rabbits will be cared for and making sure that potential new owners fully understand the responsibility which goes with offering a new home to a pet. They even do home visits to discuss everything you need to know and to make sure the rabbits have suitable accommodation.

Yesterday I’m pleased to say we brought two rabbits home and they are settling in nicely to their new environment.

Phoenix (pictured below) and Georgia were both left abandoned in boxes in a park.

Despite their ordeal they seem really very happy now and are so friendly especially at feeding time and it makes you wonder why anyone could give them up.

If you are ever thinking about getting a pet rabbit I would urge you not to buy one from a Pet Shop but first contact your local RSPCA and enquire about adoption.

Recording Video with the Sony UX180P

    August 7th, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

The Sony UX180P comes with 2 Built-in Cameras (front: 0.3M pixels and back: 1.3M pixels) which although handy is not much better than a modern mobile phone.

I personally wouldn’t use it in preference to a digital camera but it can be quite useful in situations where you’ve left behind the camera and you need to take a quick picture or video.

Below is a small video taken with the UX180P of our pet rabbit Bugs.

    ?

This is a slightly blown up version of the original but does give an idea of what to expect. What surprised me was the amount of background noise picked up by the built in microphone. What you can hear on the film is the fan or maybe hard disk or a combination of the two. In the reality of using the UX180P you wouldn’t actually notice these sounds.

    Lotty Misses Bugs

    August 3rd, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

Even though Lotty our cat and Bugs our rabbit were very wary of each other over time they did get used to one another and we were hopeful that one day they would become friends. Since Bugs’ arrival Lotty tended not to stay in the garden too long and would generally be found wandering around the lake. On the afternoon of Bugs’ passing away I think she knew that something was wrong. She spent a few hours in the garden looking all around for Bugs and couldn’t understand why she couldn’t see her.

Watching Lotty I noticed that she kept staring at where we laid Bugs to rest. After a while I think she realised where she was as she walked over and just laid there staring at the flowers we had put out for her.

We’ve never seen Lotty lay in this piece of garden before and over the last few days she has been there several times.

I guess Lotty misses Bugs as much as we do. She was a very special rabbit with a lovely personality and temperament and will be sorely missed.

    Saying Goodbye to Bugs

    July 30th, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

    Bugs

Bugs our rabbit was taken ill yesterday afternoon. She was fine in the morning and her usual bright and breezy self but around lunchtime I noticed that she was acting out of character and was listless. I immediately called the emergency vet and took her to see her. She seemed fine at the vets and even perked up a bit and the vet gave her some antibiotics and something to help her digest food just in case that was the problem and we came home.

She was still very quiet for the rest of the day but was eating a little bit so we thought she was getting better. Around midnight we checked on her again and she ate a little more but sadly when we woke up this morning she had passed away during the night.

It was really unexpected as she was only 2 years old and a very happy and active rabbit. We only had her for a few months but each and every day was a pleasure to be with her. She would always be around your feet in the garden and used to enjoy exploring her surroundings. We would find her in the strangest places and if you weren’t careful she’d be running up the stairs in the house to explore some more.

We will miss Bugs and her bunny little ways.

We decided to bury Bugs in the garden in her favourite spot underneath a rose bush. She was always happy there watching the world go by and now may she rest in peace.

    Meet Bugs

    July 11th, 2006 byPhilip Nicosia

    Say Hello to Bugs

Bugs is the latest addition to the family. We got her about a month ago and she is about 2 years old. Our biggest fear was how the cat would react to her. Lotty can be a real terror and we were worried that she would attack the rabbit if she was loose in the garden.

Much to our surprise though we found the cat was absolutely terrified of Bugs to the point that she didn’t even want to come into the house just in case the “big eared monster” was around. We had to coax her in with freshly cooked chicken for the first couple of weeks but I’m happy to say I think although wary of each other, they do seem to be getting used to each other more.

Sometimes I’m sure Lotty is too intelligent for her own good and is using Bugs as an excuse to get her own way and be spoilt with better food. She won’t even touch Whiskas now and is on to the Gourmet Pearl foods now.
