As an IT Consultant working for many businesses and home users, I am amazed by the fact that Sky still have this in place. An end user should be able to use whatever modem they want on their line, all Sky have to do is say they will not support 3rd party routyers SIMPLE!! BT, Zen, Virgin, Vispa etc all do this but Sky being Sky, they want to control the world!

I have advised 11 of my customers to leave Sky and move to BT so they use Viglen Routers on their networks.
So Sky will be losing out and I will be telling ALL my customers to do the same if this stupid block continues!

i have only had talktalk since the 8th of july 2011 and to begin with my broadband went live on the 8th but my router wasnt sent to me til the 11th july as they FORGOT to order it!! my secon issue came when i got my first bill. as i was anew customer i took the offer of a free new line saving myself 50 quid. as i have 3 young children it was ideal as i dont always have 50 qid to spare for a new line. however upon checking my bill they had charged and taken the 50 pound!!! i now apparently have to wait 7 days for a refund of money they never should have taken. all this in only 4 weeks of being a customer and i wish i had never bothered and gone with the slightly dearer option of Sky!!!!

I understand why Sky want to make it as simple as possible for the user and for them selves (no complaints there). However many people already have hardware that is better then that supplied by Sky.

Providing the username and password required to connect cannot not be that painful especially if you say there will be no customer support for it.

I know it is currently against the terms and conditions to use other hardware which is why I'm stuck with the rather poor and non configurable hardware that sky supplied. It really does effect my internal network (printers and SAN) and I don't really want to plug in yet another device to work around the limitations.

Cheers

I'm a technical man, who's just been woken up by an old non technical friend who moved to Sky broadband, but, surprise, surprise cannot connect with his own router. I attempted to guide him to find the ONLY important bit of info I needed to help him - the user connection name and password.

He couldn't find it on the Sky information pack, so I asked him to call Sky to get it. As we all know now, Sky refused. I then found out independently from this forum and others about Sky's username/password/alternative router usage policies. I was amazed/shocked/flabbergasted etc.

Whilst understanding that Sky cannot support myriad different routers (or their own, judging by comments on this forum) I was amazed to find that such information is akin to a state secret.

He will use the Sky router, assuming he stays with Sky; I won't waste my time messing with the more recently supplied model, a Sagem Router, but add to his network if it proves inadequate WiFi wise. If the connection is not stable he will have to move.

Now I know about this limitation for Sky I will make sure no customers/friends of mine make the same mistake.
