    TomTom Go 510

September 22nd, 2006 by Philip Nicosia

I have resisted getting a satellite navigation system for years now after my first experience of using one. I was going to the Channel Tunnel from Milton Keynes and when I got to the M1 it told me to turn left (the opposite direction I needed to be going in).

Naturally I turned right and the message on the screen came up “Recalculating Route” and then told me to carry straight on for 25 miles or so.

After that I thought what’s the point if all it is going to do is send me on a wild goose chase. Most of the places I go to I know how to get to them and when I didn’t I would get a route printed out on the internet. The last 2 occasions I did that though turned out to be a disaster and I ended up getting horribly lost.

So I decided to bite the bullet and have another go with a Sat Nav system. I have some friends who had already got TomTom’s and they all raved about them so when I saw the TomTom 510 with its widescreen display I decided to get one.

    TomTom Go 510

I used it for the first time a couple of days ago when I was going up to an exhibition at Olympia in London and I am so glad I got his now. It really does take the stress of driving away when you don’t know where you are going.

One thing that surprised me was just how easy it was to use. The touch screen menus are so simple that a 5 year old could use it. Just enter in the postcodes and the unit does the rest for you.

So if your someone that constantly gets lost get a TomTom or another Sat Nav unit today. They have improved drastically over the years and have come down to incredibly affordable prices.

    Why Pete Dumped Nikki

September 21st, 2006 by Philip Nicosia

I read this on Sky Showbiz.

He told heat magazine he ended the short-lived romance because of their sex life:

“She was never really interested, whereas my sex drive is very high!” he gallantly said.

“If I ever tried it on, she would have to finish her make-up or be looking her best.”

Pete also said that his ex-Housemate proved to be too high maintenance, commenting: “Her behaviour made me embarrassed.”

But Pete does have cause to be red-faced himself.

He confessed he split up with Nikki over the phone: “I didn’t know how she’d be,” he said.

    Sky Broadband Connected

September 20th, 2006 by Philip Nicosia

Well I’m now connected to Sky Broadband. Everything went smooth enough from ordering, giving them my MAC code, receiving the router, migrating over to them on the day they told me and connecting.

Connecting to Sky with their router was a piece of cake. You just connect the router to your PC and run there software which they supply that is pictorial and written for complete dummies. A five year old child could do this as they make it so easy.

The first thing I checked was the speed they had connected me on. Before when I moved broadband supplier my speed remained at the same as my existing supplier even though I paid extra to have the speed upgraded but there was no such problem with Sky.

The only disappointment I have is that you have to use Sky’s supplied wireless router to connect to them. You can’t use your own as far as I can tell. The router they supply is made by Netgear and I’m not a big fan of these. I have found in the past the wireless coverage with Netgear routers not to be as good as they reckon. I even bought one of their RangeMax routers which quickly got confined to a cupboard as the coverage was worse than the 2 year old router I had already got.

The other thing that annoys me about them is that I can’t see the webcam on my site at home as they block the port if you access it locally. It works everywhere else just not in my house.

Anyway for £5.00 a month for a 8Mb connection with a 40 GB download limit it’s a steal. I’ve seen all sorts of mentions on the web good and bad about Sky Broadband and I’m sure they are having teething problems but at least with Sky they have the backing and money to address these problems so I’m sure they will get better.

    Are Ringtones a Rip-off?

September 19th, 2006 by Philip Nicosia

In the UK if you are looking at ringtones on the internet the charges per ringtone normally range from between £3.00 - £4.50 per ringtone. Bearing in mind these ringtones are normally only snippets of tunes how is it that ringtone companies can justify their pricing?

In the US the average price for a single ringtone is $1.99. At today’s exchange rate that equates to approximately £1.06 per ringtone. A huge difference. Consumers in the US can get 3 ringtones for the price of our 1!

Most modern mobile phones now have the ability to play MP3 files so a cheaper option may be to buy the whole track rather than the 20 seconds or so that the ringtone companies sell.

A single track on iTunes could cost around 79p and bearing in mind this is the full track and not just a snippet it represents great value for money in comparison.

Now the ringtone companies may argue that in giving you the snippet you are getting the best part of the tune for your money. This may well be true but is also down to personal taste. What they think might be your favourite part of the song you may disagree with. With a bit of effort if you have the full track you can edit the file to your own preference and get exactly what you want.

There is a range of software available that enables you to do this, some free and some paid for. It’s something worth investigating if your someone who likes to change your ringtone often or want more choice of what’s available.
